PGA Tour Star Opens Up About Brittany’s Journey and Transformation
In a world where professional athletes often keep their personal struggles private, Billy Horschel chose a different path Wednesday as he celebrated a milestone that means more to him than any tournament victory.
The PGA Tour star took to social media to honor his wife Brittany’s nine-year sobriety anniversary, calling it “a special day in our household” and sharing an emotional video about her remarkable transformation.
“9 years sober today for my wife, @britthorschel,” Horschel wrote on X. “Amazing to see the transformation over the last 9 years. So proud of her!!”
A Journey of Courage
Brittany sought treatment for alcoholism on May 21, 2016, beginning a journey that would change not only her life but strengthen her entire family. The couple, who married in 2010 and have three young children (Axel, Skylar and Colbie), went public with her story in 2017 following Billy’s playoff victory at the AT&T Byron Nelson.
“‘I am an alcoholic,'” Brittany wrote in a powerful statement at the time. “I say that now without shame. Admitting that to myself, family and friends, has saved my life and my marriage.”
In his anniversary message, Billy reflected on the daily commitment required for sobriety and the joy he’s witnessed in his wife’s transformation.
“You got to work the process, you gotta stay with it one day at a time, is the motto,” he explained. “Seeing the enjoyment, seeing how much happier she is in life — it’s amazing to see.”
Message of Hope
Beyond celebrating his wife’s achievement, Horschel used the moment to extend hope to others facing similar battles. His message was simple but powerful: recovery is possible, and no one has to face addiction alone.
“The message I try to send every day on this day of the year and to anyone that discusses it with me… it’s truly possible [to get sober] you just have to take that step of saying ‘I’m tired of letting my addiction take over me and I want to get sober,’ and there are people out there who will help you,” he said. “You’re not alone in this journey.”
Brittany has channeled her experience into helping others through her blog, “The Sober Modern Mom,” where she shares insights and encouragement for those on similar paths.
The Horschels first shared their story publicly during a joint interview on “Good Morning America” in June 2017, demonstrating that even in the spotlight of professional sports, vulnerability and honesty can create powerful platforms for helping others.
Nine years later, their celebration isn’t just about personal victory — it’s about the ripple effect of courage that continues to inspire families facing their own challenges.
