The most uninspiring golfer I ever watched just gave me the most honest answer I’ve ever heard in a winner’s press conference.

Confession. I dreaded watching Cam Young. To me, he’s one of the most uninspiring golfers of all time. That misery on his face, that permanent droop. Even when he pulls out something incredible… he’s unfazed. Face hollow, emotionless, zombie…zero reaction. What’s up with this guy? I fast-forwarded through his shots for most of my PGA watching career, and I never rooted for him. In fact, I aggressively rooted against him.

Well, as you all know… he won The Players Championship last week, by one shot. And he did it with two of the most clutch shots you’ll ever see at TPC Sawgrass, on the two most devastating finishing holes in golf.

17th Hole. Nowhere To Hide.

Down one to Matt Fitzpatrick with two to play, Young called the 130-yard shot into the island green a “great number” and flighted his 57-degree wedge to 10 feet. He drained the birdie putt and tied the lead. “It’s so loud on 17,” Young said. “You just know, kind of all eyes are right there on you, so there’s nowhere to hide.” No fist pump. No roar. Just Cam Young, doing Cam Young things, face like he just ordered a sandwich.

18th Hole.

Here’s where it gets insane. The same lake on 18 that swallowed his tee shot the day before was right there waiting for him. Same hole. Same person. As he stepped up, he had one thought: “I’m going to hit the best shot of my life.” He bombed a 375-yard drive down the right side… the longest drive by any player on No. 18 in the ShotLink era since 2004… leaving just 98 yards to the hole. Fitzpatrick found the pine straw. Game over.

In the press conference, a reporter basically asked… dude, what’s going on? You should be the happiest person alive. Why aren’t you smiling?

And Cam Young broke character.

“If you asked my wife, she would say I am a very, very happy person. And I am. I mean, I love my life, I love my family, I love my job. I couldn’t ask for much more. I’m healthy. I have healthy little children.”

He explained that the stone face isn’t who he is… it’s just the best way for him to play his best. He talked about dreaming of celebrating with his wife Kelsey and their three kids… and how his family wasn’t even there for his first win at the Wyndham. He even admitted he “just about fell apart” over the eight-inch winning putt on 18. The zombie had nerves the whole time. We just couldn’t see them.

The blank face isn’t emptiness. It’s armor. Cam Young built a wall between his emotions and his performance… and behind that wall is a guy who loves his family, dreams of moments, and talks himself into hitting the best shot of his life when the lake is right there, staring at your face, reminding him of his failure the day before.

Cam Young didn’t change. But, I think I did. Lesson learned… never confuse quiet with empty. Never confuse unreadable emotion with ungratefulness.
