Si Woo Kim did everything right. Golf didn’t care.

I have a confession.

I was disappointed that Wyndham Clark won The CJ Cup Byron Nelson. He played awesome, and he won fair and square. But sometimes, in golf or in any sport, the player you are rooting for, for whatever reason, doesn’t always win.

Well, this weekend, the wrong guy won for me.

Si Woo Kim came in with a five-shot lead heading into the weekend. He shot a 60 in round two, with the whole golf world holding its breath for a 59. He’s a four-time tour winner who hasn’t won since 2023… a guy the golf community genuinely roots for. He was supposed to close this thing out.

Then Wyndham Clark happened.

  • Wyndham Clark shot a tournament-low 11-under 60 in the final round to finish 30-under
  • Si Woo Kim, leading by two heading into Sunday, fired six birdies in his first 12 holes… and still lost by three
  • Wyndham Clark eagled the par-5 12th with a 4-iron from 246 yards, then dropped a 45-footer on 15 to break the game open
  • It’s Wyndham Clark’s fourth PGA Tour win… and his first real one since 2024

That’s all good and fine, but Wyndham Clark isn’t exactly easy to root for.

Last year at Oakmont, after missing the cut at his own U.S. Open, Clark destroyed the locker room. Kicked lockers. Left doors mangled. Then, when photos leaked on social media, he issued a carefully worded “I’m very sorry for what happened”… and admitted he was hoping the whole thing would stay private. Not long before that, he threw his driver into a sponsor sign at Quail Hollow with a volunteer standing right there. Broke the club head clean off. Another apology. Another “that’s not who I am.”

Two incidents. Two public apologies. One ban from Oakmont Country Club.

His own words: “I made a mistake that I deeply regret. I’m very sorry for what happened. But I’d also like to move on.”

That’s not remorse. That’s a PR statement. And the “move on” part? He really did.

So yeah… watching him celebrate at Byron Nelson stings a little. But here’s the thing about golf. It doesn’t care about your reputation. It doesn’t care about who the crowd is pulling for. It doesn’t care about karma, character, or any of it. Golf just counts the strokes… and hands the trophy to whoever has the least. No favorites. No exceptions. No matter what.

Sunday, that was Wyndham Clark. Whether I like it or not.
